David, I just happened upon your site, and I agree with much of what you say about the romantic thoughts involved in going to another country, serving GOD, leaving behing all of my material goods, having a “Hudson Taylor” type of faith. I just spent 30 days in Guatemala working in an orphanage, it was long hard days, it was cold and we were exposed to hepatits, I was sick because of the mountain air. But the reason I was there was to futher God’s kingdom and to do “true religion”. I went on my first “short term” mission trip in 1996, I thought it would bring me closer to God, It raised more questions than it answered, I saw many things that were not of God but of man. Motivies are the most important thing when making decisions like that, we must be totaly honest with ourselves.

I lived in Tulsa, Ok. for a few years and it was there that I realized that some people go into the ministry to hide from life, they can’t or won’t accept responsibility for themselves. They think they won’t have to work anymore and many more unrealistic notions about working for our Master.

I understand that it is better to minister unto GOD as did Zadok as to minister in the outer court as did the Levites.

I am leaving soon for Guatemala to study Spanish and to build another orphanage in Peten, Guatemala.

    We covet your prayers.

    GOD Bless

Interesting comments on Edwards. At first I thought you were going to rip him apart and defile the great man. Never know with titles like, ‘Raw Christianity’these days what to expect. I too enjoy JE and have spent my entire Summer reading his works and his life. Wish we could have some serious … I mean real serious men like that in more pulpits today. Hate to see the demise of so many churhes in my denomination (Congregationalist)as they dirft further into liberalism. I realize even Jonathan Edwards delt with this in his day – thankfully, after his death, the real problems began as more and more Congregational Churches went over to the Unitarians – shame!

In any case keep up the good work. I take it the Seminary (Masters) is the school run by McArthur? If wrong and got the wrong seminary beg pardon – if right …. your in for a good education. Kepp up with Jonathan , he is worth the effort and every Pastor should at least make it his aim to encounter his major works once.
